We are all familiar with the basics of haircare- cleanse, condition, and protect. But beyond these fundamental rules, what else do you know that can contribute to having the best hair days with minimal professional intervention? Since it’s still challenging and worrying to set foot in a beauty salon, a good way to maintain healthy and luscious hair is by following at-home hair care tips from expert stylists.

  • Use Dry Shampoo

There is no shame in using dry shampoo. Since most of the work can now be done at home, with no in-person interaction with colleagues and clients, washing your hair daily is not much of a priority for many. But apart from saving you precious time, using dry shampoo has other great benefits, too.  Dry shampoo such as Elements Absorb Dry Shampoo soaks up excess oils from the hair and scalp. It adds texture and volume without the use of heating tools, making it an excellent option for those who want to keep their beauty routine short and simple.

Olivia Munn’s stylist, Christian Wood emphasises the importance of proper dry shampoo application. To get the best results every time, thorough application should be focused on hair roots. Use a hairdryer to blast out excessive dry shampoo. You can’t just let the product sit on your hair; hence they should be removed completely to effectively remove dirt, dust, and grease from the hair and scalp.

Reese Witherspoon’s stylist, Cervando Maldonado also recommends shampooing your hair every other day at the least, so your hair doesn’t dry out faster. Dry hair results in dull and damaged hair. Instead, using dry shampoo to achieve shiny and well-moisturised tresses.

  • Use the Right Brush

It’s convenient to use just one brush, but it’s not necessarily the best for your hair. Celebrity stylist Charles Baker Straham recommends keeping an arsenal of hairbrushes, so you can properly and safely handle your hair, no matter what the occasion is.

It is important to remember that different brushes are designed to provide different functions. For instance, boar bristle brushes ensure a smooth finish as they polish the hair’s cuticle layer. Wet brushes like the Wet Brush Detangling are designed to gently detangle hair quickly after a shower. Paddle brushes are meant to detangle long hair, while world-famous Denman brushes are ideal to remove anti-static and provide much-needed tension for easy styling. Round brushes such as the BX Gold Hot Tube are recommended for straightening, curl, and add volume to the hair.

  • Use Coloured Shampoo

If you have chemically treated hair, it’s best to use a shampoo that is formulated to cleanse coloured locks. For instance, if you have blonde hair, one way to prevent your colour from looking too brassy is to use purple shampoo. The De Lorenzo Illumin8 Blonde Shampoo effectively tones blonde hair by neutralising brassy and yellow tones due to repeated washing and environmental stressors. This purple shampoo contains nourishing, wholesome ingredients, including Baobab Protein, Chamomile, and Exotic Wine Extract for deep hydration. It also features natural UV protectants that fight off UV exposure, dust, and other pollutants. The formulation includes blue and violet pigments to help you maintain the silvery ash and keep your hair looking vibrant and illuminated.

The sought-after stylist, Cynthia Alvarez also suggests mixing purple shampoo with a nourishing shampoo like Macadamia Professional to deliver intense hydration to colour-treated locks.

  • Use Hair Masks

We usually use hair masks after an intense workout at the gym or from outdoor activities. Although this may seem like a good idea, celebrity stylist Jen Atkin says it’s better to use a hair mask before going outdoors or performing physical activities. Using a hair mask before a workout is highly beneficial in that it seals moisture while reducing the chance of sweat to dry out your hair and scalp. Additionally, the heat from working out will allow the mask to penetrate deeper into your cuticles and scalp.

One excellent mask that you should include in your weekly hair care routine is the Theorie Charcoal Detox Mask. It helps eliminate all product residue, giving your hair a glowing, well hydrated, and smooth appearance. It also removes impurities while protecting the hair from harmful UV light and external pollutants.

  • Avoid Applying Conditioner on Your Scalp

If your hair feels greasy immediately after taking a shower or bath, this can mean improper conditioner application. Conditioners should only be applied to the hair strands and not the scalp. Ideally, apply conditioner three to four inches away from the scalp. This will prevent the conditioner from weighing down your hair. Our scalp produces natural oils; hence it does not need extra moisture from products.
